Dr. Michael Ammons
Dr. Ammons graduated magna cum laude from Clemson University with a bachelor’s in chemical engineering. He then went on to attend the prestigious Medical University of South Carolina School of Dental Medicine, where he earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree. After graduation, he completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia, where he focused on surgical placement and restoration of dental implants. Prior to opening his current practice, Dental by Design, Dr. Ammons was the owner and operator of a traveling dental implant service in the Charleston area.
As part of his commitment to providing the best care possible to his patients, Dr. Ammons completes an average of 200 hours of continuing education each year. He is also a member of the following professional organizations:

His proudest accomplishment is his beautiful family. Dr. Ammons and his wife, Melisse, have four boys – twins, Jeremiah and Elliot, Gideon, and Jude Sawyer.
Dr. Michael Grosso
Dr. Michael Grosso received a Bachelor of Science in engineering from the University of South Carolina, where he graduated first in his class. He obtained his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the Medical University of South Carolina and his Orthodontic Certificate from Fairleigh Dickinson University in his native state of New Jersey. Dr. Michael Grosso has been practicing orthodontics for over 25 years in Moncks Corner, Summerville, and Camden, SC. When he’s not creating beautiful smiles, Dr. Grosso enjoys restoring classic cars, teaching bible study, and spending time with his family. He lives in Pinopolis, SC.
Dr. Jay W. Hustead DMD
Dr. Jay Hustead brings to the James Island office over 25 years of experience in cosmetic and comprehensive dentistry. As a third generation dentist, he followed both his father and grandfather to the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine where he received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree after receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from Penn State University.
While owning and operating large group practices in Maryland, Dr. Hustead also served as Dental Director for a regional dental insurance company. He found time to be one of the original founders of the Stanton Dental Center in Annapolis which was a free clinic for those less fortunate in need of dental care. Dr. Hustead participated with the Mission of Mercy in Maryland as well. While practicing in Maryland, the Mayor of Annapolis awarded him the Mayor’s Citation for outstanding contribution in the field of dentistry and he was voted one of the Top 20 Dentists in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
Dr. Hustead has always provided top quality care to his patients with the most current up-to-date dental technology including digital radiographs and digital impressions for scanning directly to the dental laboratories. His advanced training includes implants, endodontics (root canal therapy), and cosmetic crown and bridge
When he is not practicing dentistry, Dr. Hustead and his wife Susan, enjoy their community in I’on with their two golden retrievers. He can also be found watching Nittany Lions Football. “We Are” – Penn State!

Dr. Nina Jones
Originally from Helsinki, Finland, Dr. Hyvarinen Jones spent most of her childhood in Florida. She received her undergraduate degrees with honors in Biology and Psychology from Florida State University. Her passion for service then led her to join Teach For America, where she taught middle and high school science for 4 years in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Jones then decided to pursue a career in dentistry in order to further serve those in need. She earned her DDS at New York University where she graduated at the top of her class and was recognized with several awards for her clinical and didactic talents and leadership. While there she also participated in several community outreaches, served as a teaching assistant to other dental students, and completed an honors program in special patient care, as well as a certificate in public health. After graduation she then continued her education by completing a rigorous residency at NYU Langone Brooklyn hospital, including advanced training in all fields of dentistry. Since moving to South Carolina, Dr. Jones has enjoyed having true quality time with her husband David and newborn daughter Emilia. Outside of dentistry, Dr. Jones enjoys the arts, animals and the outdoors. She is excited to join the team and meet the needs of her community.
Dr. Andrew Clanney DMD
Dr. Andrew Clanney attended Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine. Before attending dental school he entered into the United States Army. Prior to moving to Charleston, he practiced as a general dentist in the Army for 4 and half years as a Captain. He is very dedicated to continuing education and delivering the best and latest possible treatment to his patients. He met his now wife, Megan, once he moved to Charleston, and they recently got married in September of 2020. He is very into sports and played football on the offensive line in college. Now he is very into playing golf and can be found on the local courses on the weekends with his wife who he also got into golf as well.
Dr. Michael Phillips
Dr. Michael Phillips retired from the United States Air Force in October 2017 after serving over 28 years on active duty. He has been practicing dentistry in SC since his retirement. Lieutenant Colonel Phillips received his direct commission in September 1989. He attended Hartwick College, Oneonta New York, receiving a bachelor’s degree in biology. Then, he attended Tufts University School of Dental Medicine graduating in the top 10% of his class with a Doctor of Medical Dentistry (DMD) degree in July 1989. Dr. Phillips received his hygiene license in 1987 and was a clinical associate professor at Tufts University Dental School in 1996-1997. He was the deputy commander of the 626th Dental Services clinic, Joint Base Charleston SC for 6 years. As a general dentist, he helped provide comprehensive dental care to more than 4500 military members, and their families. He chaired the hospital Infection Control Committee, and was the dental clinic logistics officer. Dr. Phillips’ interests include swimming, weight lifting, bowling, biking, travel, hiking, camping, and was a cub/boy scout leader for 6 years.
