Today, we want to talk about the difference between the titles of “DDS” and “DMD” so you understand a bit more about a dentist’s training.
DMD vs. DDS
Some dentists are listed as DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery), while some are described as DMD (Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry or Doctor of Dental Medicine). So, what do you think the difference is, besides the name? If you answered nothing, you’re exactly right! Both DDS and DMD indicate the dentist graduated from an accredited dental school. Each school decides whether it will award a DDS or a DMD degree to its graduates. Thus, both degrees have the same education and curriculum requirements, with a slightly different name.
Our Dentists
All general dentists complete three to four years of an undergraduate degree and four years of dental school, and must pass both a national written exam and state clinical licensing exam to practice. But at Ammons Dental by Design, our dentists’ training and education did not stop once they were awarded their dental degrees! They have completed post-graduate training to advance their knowledge and skills in several areas of dentistry, from dental implants to orthodontics to prosthodontics. As part of our dentists’ commitment to providing the highest quality care to our patients, they complete countless hours of continuing education each year to stay up to date with the latest innovations in dental technology and treatment.
